Dr. Akmal T. Muwwakkil is the President of The Energy Institute of the Healing Arts Foundation, Inc. a more than 25-year 501 C (3) nonprofit Wholistic health care educational organization. He has developed the Healen Arts Wellness Studio. Dr. Muwwakkil has been involved in Complementary Alternative Health Care (Functional Medicine) since 1974. He is a herbalist and has a BS, MS and Ph.D. in Nutrition from the American Holistic College of Nutrition.
He is a licensed Acupuncturist and has studied Asian Medicine with Dr. Yong Ching, Tai Chi and Qigong with Masters Heg Robinson and Fred McShan, in the 70’s and 80’s. He graduated from The College of Acupuncture & Therapeutics in Halifax Canada. He studied Massage Therapy at the Potomac Massage Training Institute and Asian Bodywork at the International School of Shiatsu. Dr. Muwwakkil completed apprenticeship training in Tui Na Traditional Chinese Medical Bodywork with Dr. Yao Xian Quian before studying in China at the Training Centre of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He received his certification as an Auricular Detoxification Specialist from AWHA.
Dr. Muwwakkil was the Nutritional Consultant to the Prince George’s County Head Start Program and authored a white paper for them. He collaborated with the Children’s Health Medical Center on Juvenile Obesity. He worked as a Life Skills Coach at Safe Healing House for Boys, The Washington Senior Wellness Centers, and Rap Inc on HIV/AIDS.
His Presentations include “A Touch of Life for Health and Wellness” program, “Sweet Mysteries of Life a Protocol for the Nutritional Deficiencies Associated with Diabetes,” and “Life on the Yellow Brick Road” at the American Public Health Association Conferences. He has authored: The Prevention and Healing of Female Imbalances, Cleansing Within the Seasons Through the Art of Fasting, and Life on the Yellow Brick Road: A Wholistic Comprehensive Approach to Reducing and/or Eliminating Tobacco and Substance Abuse, and Care for Life, a women’s health lifestyle program to assist women in reducing their prevalence of breast cancer, funded by Susan Komen for the Cure.
He has also published several health articles nationally and internationally. Dr. Muwwakkil served as a co-host of The Health Chat on HUR Voices, Sirius Radio Channel 141. He served as the chairman and member of the Morgan State University Complementary Alternative Medicine Advisory Board, Past Board Member and President of The Mitchellville School of Technology and Science Board of Directors, and a member of The Institute of Functional Medicine, the Maryland Health Disparities Coalition, African Holistic Health Association and the Maryland Acupuncture Society.
